Carr Leads Furman Into Fourth At NCAA East Regional

May 8, 2008

Athens, Ga. -- Furman's Corrine Carr posted a career-best round of three-under-par 69 to grab fourth place and help the Paladins into sole possession of fourth after the opening round of the NCAA East Regional Thursday at the par-72 University of Georgia Golf Course.

Carr, a native of Pinehurst, N.C., birdied five of her final 13 holes to card her first sub-par round as a Paladin. Starting the day on the back nine, she was even par after a bogey at No. 17 before tallying birdies at numbers 18, 1, 3 and 6.

"I don't think I could have hit the ball any better today," said Carr. "I putted the ball well and just tried to play with the right attitude and treat this like any other tournament."

Freshman Jackie Hilea birdied her final three holes to finish at even-par and in a tie for 10th. Stefanie Kenoyer, who notched an eagle at the par-five 18th hole, finished at three-over-par. Blair Lamb and Ashley Baker tallied rounds of four-over 76 and eight-over 80, respectively.

Sara-Maude Juneau of Louisville took the lead after 18 holes with a five-under 67. Amanda Blumenherst of Duke and Benedicte Toumpsin of South Carolina are tied for second at three-under-par.

Furman tallied a first round four-over-par 292 and trails tournament leader and three-time defending national champion Duke by seven strokes after the opening round. Florida holds second at two-over with South Carolina in third place at three-over. Louisville (+5), Auburn (+8), Virginia (+8) and Wake Forest (+10) rounded out the top eight on the opening day of the 54-hole tournament.

No. 12 seed Furman, making its 16th consecutive NCAA Regional appearance, will begin second round play with a seven-stroke edge on ninth place Georgia. The top eight teams and top three individuals not on the top eight teams advance to the NCAA Championship set for May 20-23, at the University of New Mexico.

Round two action is set for Friday with the Paladins scheduled to tee-off at No. 1 beginning at 12:30 p.m. Final round pairings for Saturday will be set based on results from the first two rounds.
